Description

Awareness Through Movement®workshop for a new approach to pain

Move • Touch • Support

When your low back hurts, movement can suddenly feel threatening.

We may become cautious, stiffen, avoid certain movements — and sometimes become afraid of moving altogether.

Yet pain does not necessarily mean that movement is causing damage.

Current research and clinical guidelines increasingly support staying active and maintaining appropriate movement with low back pain. Movement and exercise can help maintain function, reduce fear and avoidance, and support recovery.

When we continually limit our range of movement to stay out of pain, less movement can gradually lead to muscle deconditioning, increased tissue stiffness and reduced joint mobility — making movement feel even more difficult.

This relationship between emotions and movement patterns is not new for me as a Feldenkrais practitioner; it is at the heart of my work.

For more than 70 years, the Feldenkrais Method® has been rooted in the idea that gentle, attentive movement can help us discover alternatives to habitual patterns, reduce unnecessary effort and develop greater ease and choice.

Even Awareness Through Movement® lessons, with their slow and gentle movements, can sometimes be too demanding when someone is in significant discomfort. This is where another person’s support can make movement accessible again.

My own experience with the Feldenkrais Method is also an important part of why I teach it today. I have experienced chronic low back pain since my teenage years, following intensive sports practice and repeated strain on my back. Feldenkrais helped me develop a completely different relationship with that pain. Today, I never feel “blocked” by my back in the way I used to. Discomfort may still be there at times, but it no longer stops me from moving.

What you will learn

Pascal, with more than 10 years of experience teaching and working with the Feldenkrais Method® and Integratis™ Massage, will guide you through one-to-one Functional Integration® explorations, helping each participant discover greater ease, comfort and awareness in movement.

The workshop offers two complementary perspectives on the experience of pain and movement. One person explores while the other learns how to offer supportive touch and guidance. Then you switch roles.

Rather than trying to “fix” someone’s back, you will learn how to listen, support and move together.

  • How to move safely even when the back is uncomfortable
  • How the pelvis, spine, ribs, breathing and legs participate in back movement
  • Effective strategies for everyday movements with greater comfort
  • Gentle Awareness Through Movement® explorations adapted to different levels of comfort
  • How to use comfortable, pain-free touch to help someone regain confidence
  • Principles of Functional Integration® that can be explored with a partner
  • How to accompany someone with back discomfort without trying to “fix” them
  • How to develop more confidence and choice in movements such as sitting, turning, bending and getting up

For whom?

For anyone experiencing occasional or persistent low back discomfort, or anyone who wants to better understand and support someone close to them.

Coming as a pair is strongly encouraged, so both people can experience giving and receiving.

This is an educational and experiential workshop, not a medical treatment. It offers an approach that may support recovery, reduce discomfort and help maintain mobility and confidence in movement.
